Tiger Woods – the invincible

Eldrick Tiger Woods started his golfing career as a participant in the junior golf championship held in the year 1984. He went on winning the title of the ‘Optimist International Junior Championship’ the same year. Since then he has been cruising through and making his presence felt in every prestigious golf event.  

He was born on December 30, 1975 in California and started playing golf at the early age of 2. He has featured in television shows and magazines for his incredible golf skills as a toddler. He was only 8 when he won the Junior World Golf Championships and then he went on wining this particular event six times, also including his four subsequent wins in a single category.

 

At 15, he became the youngest player ever to win the U.S Junior Amateur Championship. Tiger turned pro in the year 1996 and his first event as a professional was the Greater Milwaukee Open organized on August 29, 1996. In 1997 he won the first most important championship of his career, the Masters. He was 21 when he received his first most esteemed title   ‘The Masters’.

  • In 1979, Woods made a record of making 48 shoots all over nine holes in Navy Golf Club of Cypress, California.
  • In 1984, for the very first time, he became the proud winner of the Optimist International Junior Championship.
  • In 1992, he won the U.S Junior National Championships.
  • In 1994, he became the youngest golfer to win the U.S Amateur Championships at TPC, Sawgress.
  • In 1996, he became the first golfer ever to win three U.S Amateur titles in a row.
  • In 1997, he made his major breakthrough by wining the ‘The Masters’ championship and in the same year he achieves the world No.1 ranking. He also won three PGA events in this year and was voted the PGA player of the Year.
  • In 1998 and 1999, he won the PGA titles and in 1999 he recorded eight consecutive wins in PGA.
  • From 2000 to 2007, he won many other tournaments and championships like British Open, PGA Championships, Buick Open, The Masters Tournament, Buick Invitational, U.S Open and others.

 

Till date, Woods has bagged titles from 48 events on PGA tour, two team titles (WGC- World Cup) and individual 18 professional titles. He also equaled Johnny Miller by marking eight PGA tour wins in one particular year. In the golf history, he is one of the players who have won the chief professional championships four times. He was selected for the World Sportsmen of the Year award in 1999 and 2000. In the year 1997, 1999, 2000 to 2007 he was selected for the Player of the Year award.
