World class golfer Retief Goosen is one of the few golfers that holds membership in three different PGA Tours, the U.S. PGA Tour, the European Tour, and the South African Tour. He has won tournaments in virtually every corner of the world, which sets him apart from other professional golfers. His consistent and successful career makes him a golfer to watch and to enjoy.
Retief was born February 3, 1969 in Petersburg, Africa. His father, Theo, was an amateur golfer that introduced Retief to the game at a very young age. Even after a near fatal experience on a golf course with lightning at the age of 15, Retief picked up his clubs again after only 3 weeks. His father saw the fact that Retief survived such an event as a sign from God that Retief had good things to come.
Retief turned professional in 1990 after a win in the South African Amateur Championship. In 1992, he won the European Tour’s Qualifying School and saw great success over the next 8 years or so in the European Tour. In 2001, he won the U.S. Open at the Southern Hill Country Club, after a very tense playoff. The years of 2004 to 2007 were his most successful years, with Retief being one of the top 5 golfers in the Official Golf World Rankings, along with Tiger Woods, Vijay Singh, Ernie Els, and Phil Mickelson.
Late 2007 and 2008 were not the best years for Retief in the golf world, but 2009 shows great promise for him. He started the 2009 Season with two wins in two major tours and is continuing to rise in the rankings. His calm attitude and professional playing makes him one of the most unflappable players on the PGA Tour. Retief is married and has two children, a son and a daughter.
